Ondo Poll: IG Orders Vehicle Ban, Restricts VIP Escorts on Election Day
In preparation for the Ondo State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, November 16, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has announced a comprehensive security plan, including a restriction on vehicular movement and a ban on VIP escorts at polling units. The directive, effective from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., aims to maintain order and reduce disruptions on election day.
Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Thursday, clarified that while the restriction covers roadways, waterways, and other modes of transport, essential services such as ambulances, media personnel, fire services, and other accredited officials are exempt. The restriction, Adejobi explained, is designed to create an environment conducive to a peaceful electoral process.
VIP escorts, security aides, and unauthorized personnel are prohibited from entering polling stations and collation centers alongside their principals. “Security aides and escorts attached to VIPs are banned from accompanying VIPs to polling stations and collation centres to prevent disruptions,” Adejobi stated. A strict prohibition on unauthorized vehicles using sirens will also be enforced to ensure a smooth process.
The IGP has also appointed Deputy Inspector General Sylvester Abiodun Alabi to lead the police’s security operations for the election, with support from Assistant Inspector General Bennett Igweh and Commissioner of Police Tunji Disu. Adejobi assured that special accommodations would be made for elderly individuals, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and persons with disabilities.
In his closing remarks, Adejobi encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activity, pledging the police’s dedication to a peaceful and democratic election in collaboration with military and federal security agencies.
