NLC Reaffirms December 1 Deadline for New Minimum Wage Implementation
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has maintained its December 1, 2024, deadline for state governments to implement the new minimum wage, warning that non-compliance will not be tolerated.
In a statement released by NLC’s Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Benson Upah, the union emphasized the need for urgent action by state governments to finalize agreements with labour unions ahead of the deadline.
“Sokoto, Zamfara, Taraba, and Plateau states have taken significant steps towards compliance,” Upah noted. Sokoto has reportedly initiated wage adjustment proposals, while Taraba and Plateau have approved a minimum wage of ₦70,000. Zamfara has begun workforce verification as part of its implementation process.
However, concerns remain over states like Cross River, Osun, and Imo, which are either still negotiating or unresponsive to the directive.
The NLC, alongside the Trade Union Congress (TUC), is actively monitoring progress nationwide, pushing for fair wages amidst rising inflation and economic challenges.
The Labour Union’s ultimatum underscores the urgency of addressing workers’ welfare in the face of soaring living costs. The NLC warned that failure to meet the December 1 deadline would provoke strong actions, as it remains committed to securing better wages for Nigerian workers.
