NLC Demands Power Minister’s Resignation Over Grid Collapses

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the resignation of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, following the persistent collapse of the national power grid under his leadership. In a statement issued Tuesday night, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed concern over the deteriorating state of the electricity sector, warning that it is on the verge of a total breakdown.
Ajaero criticized the Minister’s response to the repeated grid failures, describing it as an admission of incompetence. He noted that the frequency of grid collapses during Adelabu’s tenure surpasses those recorded under all previous administrations combined. According to the NLC, this alarming trend underscores the urgent need for competent leadership in the power sector.
The union also raised concerns about the proposed ₦8 billion allocation in the 2025 budget for a public sensitization campaign on electricity bill payments. Ajaero argued that this initiative reflects misplaced priorities, especially when contractors at the Transmission Company of Nigeria are owed over ₦200 billion. He questioned the rationale behind such expenditures when critical infrastructure is in dire need of funding.
Further criticism was directed at the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which the NLC accused of failing to uphold its regulatory duties. Ajaero alleged that NERC recently colluded with the board of a distribution company to dismiss its managing director for exposing unethical practices. He described this as a betrayal of the commission’s mandate to ensure transparency and protect consumers.
The NLC President warned against the misuse of public funds through wasteful projects and emphasized the importance of accountability. He urged the federal government to take immediate action to revitalize the power sector and restore public confidence.
Public frustration over the recurring power outages has been mounting, with many Nigerians demanding reforms and accountability from policymakers. The NLC’s statement adds to the growing pressure on the government to address these challenges and prioritize sustainable solutions for the electricity sector.
