Nigerian’s First Lady Defends Senate Amid Ongoing Controversy

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has addressed the ongoing controversy in the Nigerian Senate, emphasizing that the chamber remains a mature institution deserving of respect. Her remarks come amid allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and abuse of power claims involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Speaking at the State House, Abuja, in commemoration of International Women’s Day, Tinubu, who served in the Senate for 12 years, defended the lawmakers’ handling of the situation, urging that the chamber should be a place of honor rather than controversy. She encouraged women to uphold dignity and confidence, advising them to shut down any form of unacceptable behavior from men. Reflecting on the progress made since the 1995 Beijing Conference on gender equality, she highlighted the achievements of Nigerian women, citing young advocate Zuriel Oduwole as an example. She called on women to continue striving for excellence, asserting themselves in leadership, and ensuring they are not sidelined.
