Nigerian Petroleum Authority Warns Oil and Gas Operators Against Poor Waste Management

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has warned refineries, depot owners, and other stakeholders in the oil and gas sector over poor waste management practices. In a memo signed by Mustapha Lamorde on behalf of the Chief Executive, Farouk Ahmed, the agency highlighted the dangers of improper waste handling, including environmental contamination, air and water pollution, soil degradation, and serious health risks to nearby communities. Citing the Petroleum Industry Act of 2021 and the 2023 Environmental Regulation, the NMDPRA reminded operators of their legal responsibility to manage waste from “cradle to grave.”
