Nigerian Army Confirms Arrest of Journalist Fisayo Soyombo in Anti-Bunkering Operation
The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo, alongside suspected criminals, at an illegal bunkering site in Port Harcourt.
Soyombo, known for exposing alleged corruption within government institutions, had recently released a video accusing the Nigeria Customs Service of involvement in rice smuggling. His arrest prompted an outcry, leading to widespread speculation and concern over the circumstances.
Danjuma Danjuma, acting deputy director of public relations at the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, clarified that Soyombo’s arrest was part of a broader operation targeting illegal oil bunkering. The operation, aimed at tackling pipeline vandalism and illegal oil connections, resulted in the capture of several suspects, including Soyombo. The Army emphasized that the journalist’s arrest was directly linked to ongoing anti-oil theft efforts, rejecting claims that it was politically motivated.
The 6 Division also addressed reports circulating on social media, calling them misleading. The Army insisted that Soyombo, along with other arrested individuals, is undergoing preliminary investigations to assess his involvement in the illegal activities. The Division urged media outlets to ensure the accuracy of their reports before publishing, stressing that misinformation could hinder their efforts in combating oil theft.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to fighting criminal activities, particularly oil theft, to protect national resources and boost oil and gas production in the region. The Army assured the public that it remains dedicated to ensuring security and welcomed constructive dialogue to clarify any misunderstandings surrounding the incident.
