NECO Refutes Allegations of Unpaid Allowances to Examiners
The National Examinations Council (NECO) has dismissed recent social media claims regarding alleged unpaid allowances to external examiners.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, clarified that all 72,138 examiners engaged for the 2024 School-based Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) have been fully paid their allowances.
He explained that payments to the examiners began on October 4, 2024, and were made through a bank-based system to ensure smooth reconciliation and avoid payment errors.
He further stated that the payment process was completed by November 13, 2024, in accordance with NECO’s payment plan as the Council also discovered that some examiners had submitted incorrect bank details, which were promptly addressed through reconciliation with the affected individuals. He emphasized that payments were successfully processed through 24 different banks, and all outstanding issues have now been cleared.
The statement categorically refuted the social media rumours, which had falsely claimed that NECO deliberately withheld payments from the examiners. The Council expressed disappointment over the spread of these unverified claims and advised any individuals with concerns to seek clarification directly from NECO before resorting to public channels.
NECO reassured its examiners and other ad-hoc staff of the Council’s commitment to honouring their contributions to the smooth conduct of the exams. The management reiterated that the timely payment of allowances is a priority, and the organization values the dedication and hard work of its examiners.
