NCC To Meets Telecom Consumer Groups On Thursday Over Tariff Hike
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has scheduled a critical meeting with telecom consumer advocacy groups and industry stakeholders on Thursday in Abuja to discuss the proposed 100% tariff hike in the telecom sector.
Adeolu Ogungbanjo, President of the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS), confirmed the development on Wednesday, expressing hope that the meeting would address the contentious issue.
“I had mentioned earlier that there is a need for the NCC to discuss and iron out the issue. Yesterday, I was invited to the meeting, which will be held on Thursday in Abuja at 2 pm,” Ogungbanjo stated.
The tariff hike proposal, submitted by telecom operators to the NCC, is reportedly aimed at mitigating rising operational costs fueled by increased fuel prices and the depreciation of the naira. While the proposal awaits the NCC’s approval, it has drawn significant backlash from consumer rights groups, who fear the potential economic strain on Nigeria’s population.
Sola Ajulo, President of the Consumer Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria, highlighted the importance of the discussions during an appearance on Arise TV. She emphasized the need for a balanced approach to telecom pricing amid current economic challenges.
“It’s crucial that all stakeholders are present and agree on the terms, as this will determine whether the government will approve a price increase and under what conditions,” Ajulo noted. She suggested a gradual adjustment rather than a steep increase, proposing measured terms that prioritize consumer welfare.
Telecom operators have argued that revenue from the proposed tariff hike would be channeled into significant upgrades to network infrastructure and service quality. The NCC has reportedly agreed to oversee the implementation of these upgrades to ensure compliance.
As the telecom industry faces mounting economic challenges, Thursday’s meeting is expected to play a pivotal role in determining the trajectory of telecom pricing in Nigeria, balancing the sector’s sustainability with consumer affordability.
