NCAA Recertifies Lagos and Abuja Airports, Four Years After Last Certification
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has successfully recertified Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja marking a significant step in enhancing the country’s aviation infrastructure.
This recertification, which comes four years after the last one, is essential to ensure the safety of aircraft operations and compliance with international safety standards.
In a statement following the recertification, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, emphasized the importance of continued improvements as she highlighted the need for ongoing assessments and upgrades, particularly to the two main runways at Murtala Muhammed Airport and the primary runway in Abuja, to ensure they remain in line with the International Civil Aviation Organization standards. The FAAN also plans to focus on enhancing taxiways in Lagos, which play a crucial role in facilitating the efficient movement of aircraft.
Furthermore, Mrs. Kuku acknowledged that further work is required to fully meet ICAO standards, particularly regarding runway conditions and airfield lighting systems. She expressed gratitude for the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, noting that their leadership has been instrumental in advancing the aviation sector. Despite the challenges ahead, Kuku expressed confidence that, with continued dedication and resources, Nigeria’s airports would exceed expectations in providing a safe and efficient air travel experience.
