National Broadcasting Commission Apologizes for EFCC’s Actions at Enugu Radio
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued an apology to the Nigerian broadcast industry, the people of Enugu State, and the listening public regarding the recent incursion by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into Urban Radio in Enugu.
In a statement, NBC spokesperson Susan Obi expressed dismay over the EFCC’s actions, which she described as a violation of broadcasting ethics.
she emphasized that the manner in which the arrest was conducted was improper, especially during a live programme, and highlighted the potential for such actions to create public disorder and panic.
While acknowledging the EFCC’s important role in combating financial crimes in Nigeria, the NBC stated that it disagrees with the agency’s approach during the Urban Radio incident. The EFCC has clarified that Ekoh was not arrested during a live broadcast and that their operatives did not disrupt the station’s activities, claiming the arrest was linked to a separate investigation involving an alleged Ponzi scheme.
Urban Radio, however, maintains that the EFCC did interrupt their live programme to carry out the arrest and has provided evidence to support its claim. In her statement, Obi reiterated the NBC’s commitment to upholding ethical standards in broadcasting and urged media professionals to continue adhering to these principles while navigating the legal proceedings. The commission hopes that this incident serves as a reminder of the need for respectful collaboration between law enforcement and the media.
