National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control Director General Denies Striking Workers’ Claims as Industrial Action Continues
The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has refuted claims made by striking workers regarding their grievances, labeling them as “untrue.”
She emphasized that while the agency is committed to the welfare of its staff, its ability to address issues such as promotions is limited by its mandate.
In a statement issued by the agency’s Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola, Adeyeye reiterated her dedication to enhancing employee welfare. However, as of the latest reports, the workers have continued their one-week industrial action, demanding promotions for over 500 staff members who participated in the 2024 promotion interviews but were not promoted due to a claimed lack of vacancies.
The aggrieved employees argue that many of them met or exceeded the required pass marks during the interviews, but management cited insufficient vacancies. Additionally, the workers are protesting NAFDAC’s failure to honor a 2022 agreement concerning their welfare and promotion issues. In response, Adeyeye maintained that the agency has implemented several reforms since she took office in February 2022, including the introduction of new operational vehicles to improve efficiency and staff welfare.
Akintola further clarified that promotions depend on the number of vacancies approved by the government, stating that NAFDAC’s role is to conduct examinations rather than determine promotion numbers. He also addressed concerns about travel allowances, asserting that staff have consistently received their due estacodes when supporting documentation is provided. The agency is optimistic that a resolution to the ongoing strike is forthcoming, with discussions underway at the highest levels of government.
