Military Push Forces Lakurawa Armed Group to Retreat Amid Intensified Operations in Kebbi, Sokoto
Members of the Lakurawa armed group are reportedly retreating as Nigerian military forces intensify ground and air operations against the group’s camps across Kebbi and Sokoto states.
The assault follows a brutal attack on Mera, a community in Kebbi’s Augie Local Government Area, where 17 people lost their lives.
In response, the Nigerian Army deployed troops to the region. Upon arrival in Birnin Kebbi, the contingent, according to Abdullahi Idris Zuru, media aide to Kebbi State Governor Dr. Nasir Idris, met with Deputy Governor Abubakar Umar Tafida before advancing to Mera.
There, the troops succeeded in dislodging the Lakurawa fighters and recovered rustled cattle abandoned by fleeing attackers.
Governor Idris, who had earlier sought federal assistance to counter the escalating violence, pledged continued efforts to protect citizens.
“The governor has pledged to safeguard the lives and property of all Kebbi State citizens, leading him to seek federal intervention,” Zuru explained.
National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu reaffirmed the government’s determination to eliminate the Lakurawa threat. Speaking in Abuja at the 2024 Comptroller-General of Customs Conference, Ribadu, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, vowed to “chase the so-called Lukarawa out of our country,” and expressed confidence that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategies would silence critics.
Ribadu also highlighted Nigeria’s economic improvements, pointing to increased crude oil production and fiscal reforms by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as indicators of progress.
“When we promised that we would fix this country, we will do so because President Tinubu has never been a failure,” he said, underscoring the administration’s commitment to both national security and economic stability.
