Military Denies Civilian Casualties in Sokoto Air Strikes, Insists Targets Were Terrorist Associates
The Joint Task Force North West Operation Fansan Yamma has dismissed reports that its recent air strikes in Sokoto State mistakenly hit civilians, affirming that the strikes targeted associates of the Lakurawa terrorist group.
Reports emerged Wednesday alleging that military fighter jets bombed two communities—Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa—in Silame Local Government Area, killing at least ten civilians. Abubakar Bawa, Press Secretary to the Sokoto State Governor, corroborated claims of civilian casualties.
However, in a statement issued by Lt. Col. Abdullahi Abubakar, spokesman for the Joint Task Force, the military maintained that the strikes were based on precise intelligence and reconnaissance.
“Importantly, the targets struck in the vicinity of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa have been positively identified as associated with the Lakurawa group, reinforcing the justification for the military action taken,” the statement read. Lt. Col. Abubakar emphasized that all military operations are conducted with careful planning to ensure minimal risk to civilian lives.
“These reports have raised concerns; however, it is crucial to clarify that all military operations are conducted based on thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions,” he stated. “This rigorous process is particularly important when targeting groups like the Lakurawa terrorist organization, as it aims to ensure precision and protect civilian lives.”
The spokesman also urged the public to rely on verified information to avoid the spread of misinformation and unnecessary panic. The military’s stance comes amid heightened scrutiny of its operations in the North West region, where terrorist activities and counter-insurgency measures have significantly impacted local communities.
