Mayorkun Reflects on Life-Changing Encounter with Davido
Afrobeats sensation Mayorkun has shared the story of his remarkable rise to stardom, crediting Nigerian superstar Davido for transforming his life and career. Mayorkun recounted the pivotal moment during the TraceLive x Tiger Beer concert in Lagos, where he also delivered an electrifying performance.
The singer, born Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, revealed that his journey to fame began in 2016 when he uploaded a cover of Davido’s hit song The Money on social media. Davido discovered the cover on Twitter, reached out to Mayorkun, and signed him to his record label, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW).
Shortly after joining DMW, Mayorkun released his debut single, Eleko, which became a massive hit. This breakthrough earned him widespread acclaim, including the prestigious Next Rated award at The Headies in 2018.
Speaking to the audience at the concert, Mayorkun reflected on his life-changing encounter with Davido. “I came into this world just like every other person,” he began. “But God gave me a gift on my way here. On my way to fulfill my destiny, I met a man called Davido and everything changed. Now, I have the opportunity to meet far more people than I can ever imagine. My name is Mayorkun, The Mayor of Lagos.”
The concert featured memorable performances of Mayorkun’s hit songs, including Eleko and Of Lagos, celebrating his journey in the Nigerian music industry. The event was infused with cultural vibrancy as Eyo dancers brought the spirit of Lagos to life, while dancer and hypeman Poco Lee made a surprise appearance, igniting the crowd with his energetic moves.
