Lawmakers Advance Bill to Make Voting Mandatory

The House of Representatives has passed for second reading a bill seeking to amend the Electoral Act 2022 to make voting compulsory for all eligible Nigerians. The bill, sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Daniel Ago, aims to curb voter apathy and increase electoral participation. However, some lawmakers raised concerns. PDP’s Mark Esset from Akwa Ibom argued that making voting mandatory won’t fix the country’s electoral flaws. He stressed the need to restore public trust in the voting process before enforcing compulsory participation.
