LASTMA Expands Night-Time Operations Ahead of New Year to Ensure Smooth Traffic Flow
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has announced an expansion of its night-time traffic management operations across key commercial areas of the state, in preparation for the New Year festivities. This move is aimed at ensuring smooth traffic flow and enhancing road safety during the holiday season, especially in high-traffic areas like Lekki-Ajah, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, and other critical zones within the city. The agency’s initiative comes in response to the expected increase in vehicular activities during this period.
In a statement on Monday, LASTMA’s Public Relations Officer, Adebayo Taofiq, outlined that the initiative would help maintain uninterrupted vehicular movement, particularly in areas with high commercial activities. The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized that the expanded operations were designed to manage the surge in traffic during the festive season and ensure that major thoroughfares remain accessible.
He noted that the agency’s personnel had been effectively executing their duties to prevent disruptions and keep traffic flowing smoothly.
Bakare-Oki also urged motorists to exercise discipline on the roads, stressing the importance of adhering to the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. Cooperation from the public is seen as crucial in maintaining safety and maximizing the efficiency of the city’s transport infrastructure. In addition to traffic management, LASTMA highlighted its efforts in safeguarding public safety, including a recent rescue operation. LASTMA officers were credited with swiftly attending to a young woman involved in a severe accident near the Gbagada Bridge, after the driver and passengers of the vehicle were found to be intoxicated.
The agency reiterated its commitment to maintaining safety on Lagos roads during the holiday season, ensuring a smooth and orderly experience for both residents and visitors. LASTMA’s proactive approach aims to minimize disruptions, prevent accidents, and provide timely assistance when needed, underscoring its role in keeping Lagos’ transportation network safe and efficient throughout the festive period.
