Lagos government Dislodges Illegal Occupants Under Eko Bridge in Major Clean-up Operation
The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, has successfully dislodged occupants from 84 rooms under the Eko Bridge at Elegbata, Lagos Island.
This operation, led by Corps Marshal, retired Major Olanini Cole, followed a public complaint after an individual was attacked at the site. The incident prompted the state Commissioner for Environment to order the demolition of the illegal structures.
During the operation, one person was arrested for allegedly constructing an eight-room toilet and linking the pipes into the Lagoon as this raised serious public health concerns, as the water used in the makeshift kitchen was deemed hazardous, especially given its proximity to areas where fishermen operate.
The evictees, according to Cole, claimed they had no money to rent decent apartments, which led them to set up the illegal structures. While acknowledging their hardship, he emphasized that such settlements create significant risks to public health and the environment.
He further stated that some of the occupants were also cooking food for the public in the area, adding to the health hazards.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts by LAGESC to clear illegal settlements across Lagos. Cole confirmed that the demolition would continue in other parts of the state to dislodge occupants from black spots, with a focus on ensuring the safety and cleanliness of public spaces for all residents.
