Lagos Ministry Seals Building Over Drainage Obstruction

The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has sealed a building on Alakoro Street in Lagos Island for obstructing the drainage system with construction materials. The action was taken during an inspection by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, who expressed his displeasure over the situation. The materials were found blocking the drainage, prompting the ministry to seal the site until the materials were moved and the area cleaned.
Wahab also discussed the ongoing regeneration efforts for Lagos Island, which includes improvements to both drainage systems and road infrastructure. However, he highlighted concerns about certain critical areas that were not included in the initial plan, such as the Olusi Bombata and Alagbafo collectors. He criticized the illegal construction of these drainage systems, noting that it would be challenging to maintain them if they are obstructed by buildings.
In addition, Wahab emphasized the importance of enforcing environmental laws, particularly those related to setbacks between construction sites and drainage systems. He acknowledged the cooperation of local governments in ensuring a cleaner environment while stressing that local authorities do not have the right to violate state laws. The ministry plans to continue advocating for compliance, with strict enforcement to prevent further obstructions.
The Commissioner reassured residents that the government is committed to maintaining public infrastructure for everyone’s benefit. He reiterated that the government will take necessary actions against those who deliberately disregard the law, while also continuing educational campaigns about environmental protection, including the phasing out of styrofoam and single-use plastics.
