Lagos Assembly Suspends Alimosho Local Government Chairman, Jelili Sulaimon
The Lagos State House of Assembly has imposed an indefinite suspension on Jelili Sulaimon, the Chairman of the Alimosho Local Government Area.
During a plenary session on October 7, lawmakers unanimously voted for his suspension and appointed the vice chairman, Mr. Akinpelu Johnson, to oversee the council’s operations in his absence.
The Assembly directed the council’s management team, including the manager and treasurer, to support Johnson in his new role.
The decision to suspend Sulaimon stemmed from allegations of non-compliance and a defiant attitude toward the legislative body.
Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, highlighted a chaotic incident in April 2024 in the Iyana-Ipaja area of Alimosho, which resulted in the death of Mr. Micheal Ajayi. Okanlawon indicated that Sulaimon had allegedly orchestrated this unrest and had shown misconduct during the investigation.
Lawmakers criticized Sulaimon for his failure to adhere to Assembly directives and for mismanaging public funds. Majority Leader Noheem Adams supported the suspension, stating it would encourage better governance among other local government chairmen. He noted that Sulaimon’s disregard for procurement processes and budget compliance demonstrated a pattern of misconduct that warranted immediate action.
Hon. Nureni Akinsanya referenced a report from the State Auditor-General that outlined Sulaimon’s consistent non-compliance with financial regulations and identified significant irregularities in his records. Other members, including Hon. Ladi Ajomale, expressed surprise at Sulaimon’s continued defiance despite previous warnings. The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, instructed the Clerk of the House to communicate the Assembly’s resolution to all relevant authorities, marking a significant step in addressing the governance issues within the local council.
