Kwara State University (KWASU) has announced a significant reduction in tuition fees for students with disabilities, cutting N100,000 from their fees.
This decision was made public by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, during an event commemorating the 2024 International Day of Persons Living with Disabilities.
The event was organized by the university’s Disability Support Office and the Department of Special Education. In addition to the tuition fee reduction, Prof. Jimoh also revealed that KWASU has approved a monthly allowance of N50,000 for staff members with disabilities.
Prof. Jimoh explained that these measures are part of the university’s commitment to supporting both students and staff with disabilities. He emphasized the institution’s belief that everyone, irrespective of their abilities, should have the right to fully participate in all aspects of life, including education and employment. This initiative aims to create an inclusive environment that fosters equal opportunities for all members of the university community.
During the event, the Vice-Chancellor underscored that the university’s efforts to promote inclusion go beyond symbolic gestures. He highlighted the importance of advocating for the rights and dignity of people with disabilities, ensuring that they are not marginalized but are supported in their academic and professional pursuits. The university has committed to continuously improving its infrastructure and services to make campus life more accessible for students and staff with disabilities.
Furthermore, Prof. Jimoh reiterated the university’s dedication to enhancing the experiences of people with disabilities by providing accessible facilities and increasing employment opportunities, such as hiring more sign language interpreters. KWASU’s focus on inclusivity and support for people with disabilities aligns with the institution’s broader goal of creating a community where everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, can thrive.
