Kwara State Tertiary Institution Workers to Begin Three-Day Warning Strike Over Minimum Wage Issue
The Committee of Unions in Tertiary Institutions (CUTI) in Kwara State has announced a three-day warning strike, set to begin on December 4 and run through December 6. The strike is in protest of the state government’s failure to implement the approved national minimum wage for its workers. This action follows multiple letters and ultimatums issued to the government, which have not led to a resolution.
The decision for the warning strike was made during an emergency congress held on November 30 at the College of Education in Oro, Irepodun Local Government Area. A communiqué released after the congress, signed by CUTI’s State Chairman, Musa Mustapha, and Secretary, Haruna Ndagi, outlined the course of action.
The union will also lead a peaceful demonstration in all institutions on December 3 to raise awareness about the workers’ plight before the strike begins.
CUTI has made it clear that if the government does not implement the new national minimum wage, including two months’ arrears, by December 9, the strike will continue indefinitely. The union emphasized that this strike is a last resort, and they remain open to negotiations with the state government to resolve the issue amicably.
The union’s demand is in response to the government’s failure to implement the new Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure and the national minimum wage, which was approved by President Bola Tinubu on May 18. CUTI had previously sent letters and ultimatums on October 4, October 21, and November 7, urging the government to fulfill these obligations.
