Kwara State Police Confirm Dismissal, Prosecution of Officers Linked to Student’s Murder
The Kwara State Police Command has announced plans to prosecute three police officers found guilty in the killing of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a second-year student at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.
This information was disclosed by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Victor Olaiya, in a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer Ejire-Adeyemi Toun on Monday night.
Following an investigation into the incident, the three officers—Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip—have been dismissed from their positions. The police report, titled “Final Update on the Case of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola,” confirmed that these officers would face prosecution in a court of competent jurisdiction.
The police statement detailed the findings from a thorough investigation and internal disciplinary trial, which found the officers guilty of several offenses, including leaving their assigned duties, corrupt practices, and the unlawful exercise of authority. Their dismissal took effect on October 4, 2024, and arrangements for their court appearance are currently underway.
In light of these events, CP Victor Olaiya expressed the police command’s condolences to Ishola’s family, friends, and colleagues, reaffirming their commitment to justice and accountability. The tragic death of Ishola, who was allegedly murdered during a police stop and search operation, led to widespread protests by students demanding justice. The police urged the public to remain patient and trust the legal process while committing to maintaining law and order in Kwara State.
