Kwara Police Commissioner Warns Vigilantes Against Jungle Justice Following Tragic Death
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, has issued a stern warning to vigilante groups against engaging in jungle justice following recent incidents involving the violent treatment of suspects. Olaiya’s statement comes in response to the death of Lanre Adebayo, a University of Ilorin graduate, who allegedly died after being beaten by vigilantes in the Ita-Elepa area of Ilorin.
Adebayo reportedly encountered the vigilante group on his way home after visiting his mother. An argument broke out, which escalated into violence, resulting in his death. Expressing dismay, Commissioner Olaiya condemned the vigilante members’ actions, emphasizing that they had no authority to “teach anyone a lesson” through violent means.
Olaiya also cited another recent case in which vigilantes detained a suspect and allegedly demanded N1.5 million for his release. This prompted a lawyer to file a petition with the police command, further highlighting concerns over vigilante abuses in the state.
The Commissioner urged all vigilante members to adhere to the rule of law when dealing with suspects and warned that the police would not tolerate extrajudicial actions. He reassured the public that the police would investigate the cases thoroughly and ensure accountability.
