Kwara PDP Calls for Accountability Over Governor’s N2 Billion Travel Spending
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has sharply criticized Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for spending an alarming N2 billion on foreign trips within just nine months, with no apparent benefit for the state or its people.
In a statement released by the party, they expressed their disapproval, highlighting the unreasonableness of such expenditures when a large portion of the population is facing severe economic challenges.
The PDP further revealed that in the past two years, the governor has spent over N5 billion on foreign junkets, yet these trips have produced no measurable positive outcomes for the state.
The party emphasized that Kwara, with a poverty rate of 48%, should not be subjected to such wasteful spending. Civil servants in the state, earning as little as N75,000 monthly under the minimum wage arrangement, are struggling to make ends meet, while the governor spends public funds on fruitless travels.
Despite his frequent trips, Governor Abdulrazaq has failed to attract any foreign investment into the state, as confirmed by a recent report from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, revealing his inability to bring economic growth to Kwara.
The PDP also expressed concerns over the neglect of essential sectors, such as health, education, rural infrastructure, and security, while the governor continues to squander state funds. Hospitals in Kwara suffer from a shortage of health workers and poor infrastructure, schools are in disrepair, and security threats persist. The party criticized the governor for focusing on personal luxuries rather than addressing these pressing issues that directly impact the well-being of the people.
In conclusion, the PDP called on the people of Kwara to hold Governor Abdulrazaq accountable for his wasteful spending and to demand transparency regarding unresolved financial issues, including the N10 billion reportedly held in an unknown bank account since 2019 and the questionable N17.8 billion spent on a hotel renovation. The party urged anti-corruption agencies such as the EFCC and ICPC to closely monitor the governor’s financial activities, stressing the need for public funds to be used responsibly for the benefit of the people, not for personal indulgences.
