Kwara chaphter of Nigeria Union of Pensioners Urges Pensioners to Be Patient with Government on Outstanding Demands
The Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has called for patience among its members as negotiations with the state government continue regarding their outstanding demands.
In a joint statement issued by the union’s chairman, Alhaji Saidu Oladimeji, and secretary, Comrade Chief Abraham Jona Gana, the leadership emphasized the importance of maintaining a polite and respectful approach in interactions with the government.
They advised members to avoid provocative statements, stressing that a confrontational stance could undermine the union’s ongoing efforts to resolve the issues at hand.
While urging restraint, the NUP leaders also acknowledged the efforts of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq in addressing some of the pensioners’ concerns including regular monthly pension payments, palliative measures, and the incremental payment of gratuities. The union commended the governor for these initiatives, which have been beneficial to many pensioners in the state.
However, the union also outlined several key areas that require urgent attention. They called on the state government to implement consequential adjustments based on the N30,000 minimum wage, as well as the federally approved pension increases for various levels, including a 20% hike for levels 1-16 and a 28% increase for level 17. Additionally, the union urged the government to adjust the new N70,000 minimum wage and promptly address the allocation of land for a new secretariat, which would help improve their operations.
In conclusion, the union reiterated its support for Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s administration, wishing him a long life, good health, and wisdom to lead Kwara State to greater progress. They also urged the government to expedite the payment of gratuities to retirees in a timelier manner, rather than in installments, to meet the immediate needs of their members.
