Kogi State Government Sets Up Committee to Investigate WASSCE Malpractice
The Kogi State Government has tasked the newly formed Examination Misconduct, Investigation, and Disciplinary Committee to investigate schools and individuals implicated in examination malpractice during the 2024 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The State Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones, inaugurated the committee in Lokoja and emphasized that examination malpractice is a serious issue that threatens the future of students and must be addressed immediately.
The committee’s role is to investigate the extent of involvement by schools and individuals and recommend appropriate disciplinary actions in accordance with the Kogi State Education Law of 2020. The Commissioner further stated that the committee is expected to submit its report within one week and must ensure fairness and integrity in their findings. He assured that the state government would implement the committee’s recommendations as the current administration strongly opposes any form of examination fraud.
Jones also reiterated that the state government has made significant investments in education and will not allow the actions of some school principals and supervisors to undermine the progress being made. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the integrity of the education system and protecting the interests of students.
The committee, which is chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Jibrin Saidu, includes members from various relevant bodies such as the Ministry of Justice, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the West African Examination Council (WAEC), and other educational organizations. The committee will ensure a thorough and impartial investigation into the malpractice, which has led to the de-recognition of some schools and the blacklisting of certain supervisors by WAEC.
