Kano Government to Procure Life Jackets for Riverine Communities After Boat Mishaps
The Kano State government has approved the procurement of life jackets for riverine communities to enhance the safety of residents and protect their properties.
This decision was announced by the state Commissioner for Transportation, Alhaji Muhammad Ibrahim Diggol, during a stakeholders’ meeting on water transportation in the state capital. The government’s move comes in response to recurring boat mishaps in several local communities, which have raised concerns about the safety of water transport.
Diggol emphasized the importance of taking appropriate measures to improve safety in the water transportation system, particularly in the 18 local government areas connected by rivers. As part of this initiative, the state government has approved the distribution of life jackets to affected riverine communities. The goal is to reduce the frequency of boat accidents, which have resulted in the loss of lives and properties, and to provide a safer environment for those relying on water transport.
The Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with the relevant local governments, has also planned to conduct livelihood surveys and implement safety measures aimed at improving the water transportation system. This initiative is part of broader efforts to address the challenges facing the water transport sector in the affected areas. The government has expressed its commitment to taking practical steps to safeguard the welfare of the people living in these communities.
During the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Alhaji Abdulmumin Musa Aliyu, underscored the administration’s dedication to addressing the issues surrounding water transportation. He urged local government councils to cooperate fully with the ministry to ensure the successful implementation of safety measures. The meeting reflected the administration’s resolve to protect lives and property, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between all stakeholders in achieving these objectives.
