JAMB Introduces Trial Mock Exam for Candidates Under 16

January 27, 2025

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced a new initiative called the “Trial Testing Mock Only” examination for candidates under the age of 16, aimed at preparing them for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) once they become eligible. JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, explained that the initiative is designed to help younger candidates familiarize themselves with the UTME process, as the government has set 16 as the minimum age for university admissions in Nigeria.

Professor Oloyede clarified that the UTME is a ranking examination, not a pass-or-fail test like the West African School Certificate (WAEC) or the National Examination Council (NECO) exams. He also announced new measures to curb age falsification, revealing that candidates will no longer be allowed to alter their age on JAMB forms. In addition, he disclosed that the sale of forms for the 2024/2025 academic year would run from January 31 to March 5, with each form priced at ₦3,500. Candidates will also be required to pay administrative charges at Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers, while post-UTME fees are capped at ₦2,000.

The Mock Examination will take place in February, while the main UTME is scheduled for March 28. Professor Oloyede also highlighted the issue of illegal fees being charged by some private schools and CBT centers, urging candidates to report any instances of exploitation. As part of this year’s preparations, JAMB has selected “The Lekki Headmaster” by Kabir Alabi, PhD, as the recommended novel for UTME candidates. The board has printed 1.8 million copies of the book, which is sold for ₦1,000 each, and plans to release an audio version for visually impaired candidates at no charge.

To enhance examination infrastructure, JAMB has established 1,000-capacity CBT centers in Kaduna and Imo states, with plans for a new center in the southwest, potentially in Abeokuta or Lagos. Additionally, the University of Ilorin was recognized as the most preferred institution for admissions in Nigeria, lauded for attracting a large number of international students and receiving global recognition. These efforts by JAMB are aimed at improving the admissions process, ensuring fairness, and enhancing the quality of education in Nigeria.
