Inspector General of Police Refutes Allegations of Police Aiding Electoral Fraud

June 24, 2025

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has refuted allegations that the police aid election manipulation in Nigeria, calling such claims baseless. Speaking at the National Democracy Stakeholders Summit in Abuja, Egbetokun emphasized that the police remain impartial during elections, focusing solely on maintaining law and order. He clarified that the police do not count votes or officiate elections, as that responsibility lies with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The IGP also highlighted the police’s ongoing training and collaboration with INEC, civil society organizations, and the media to ensure democratic standards are upheld.
