IGP Egbetokun Warns Police Officers Against Unethical Practices and Misuse of Power

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has expressed concern over the unethical practices of transferring ongoing cases and the misuse of public offices by some officers.
He warned that any officer found engaging in these activities would face strict disciplinary action, as such practices undermine investigations and erode public trust in the police force.
Egbetokun emphasized that transparency, professionalism, and accountability must guide policing in the country and directed all supervising officers, especially those in investigative units, to handle cases with integrity.
The IGP also reminded officers that the police have no jurisdiction over civil matters unless a criminal element is involved, and investigations must be overseen by State Commissioners of Police. Furthermore, he addressed the issue of frivolous or malicious petitions, stating that all petitions submitted to the police must include a declaration of authenticity, and those found to file false complaints would face sanctions.
