Ibadan Stampede: Atiku Abubakar Mourns Victims
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at a funfair held at Islamic High School, Orita Bashorun, Ibadan. The incident, which claimed the lives of 35 children, left several others critically injured, and led to the arrest of seven suspects, has sent shockwaves across the nation.
In a post on his official X handle, the 2023 People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate described the tragedy as heart-wrenching, offering condolences to the grieving families and prayers for the recovery of the injured.
“How do we tell nearly three dozen parents and wards that the children they saw off with excitement to a holiday funfair in Ibadan will not be returning home, not even late for Christmas?” Atiku wrote. “I am heartbroken, like millions of our citizens, over the tragedy that befell children who only wanted to have some fun after the rigours of the school term had come to an end.”
Atiku prayed for divine comfort for the families of the victims, adding, “I send my deepest condolences and prayers to the families who may have had their beautiful flowers plucked from them so early. May the beautiful souls of the deceased rest in peace.”
He also extended his sympathies to the government and people of Oyo State, emphasizing solidarity during this difficult time.
The stampede, which occurred during an end-of-term holiday event, has raised concerns over safety protocols at public gatherings, particularly those involving children. Authorities have pledged to thoroughly investigate the incident and hold the culprits accountable.
The tragedy underscores the importance of stringent safety measures at events to prevent such devastating occurrences in the future.
