House of Representatives Advances Bill to Protect Domestic Workers’ Rights

A bill to domesticate the Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights in Nigeria has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives, aiming to establish fair wages, improved working conditions, and legal protections for domestic workers.
Sponsored by Hon. Akin Alabi, the bill addresses issues such as low wages, lack of contracts, and abuse, aligning Nigeria with global labour standards as key provisions include mandatory employment contracts, a minimum wage, standardized working hours, and social security benefits. Furthermore, the bill which has received broad support from lawmakers, will now undergo committee review for further input from stakeholders.
