High Tomato Prices Hit Nigeria Amid Off-Season and Pest Outbreak
The Tomato Out Growers Association of Nigeria says the soaring cost of tomatoes in markets is due to the off-season period and a significant drop in production. Sani Danladi, Kano State Chairperson, explained that supply has dwindled compared to last year, with high prices expected to persist until September when the tomato season begins.
A major pest outbreak, Tuta Absoluta, has devastated farms in Kano, Kaduna, and Jos, while rising fuel costs and illegal levies on highways have increased transportation expenses, further driving up prices. The association urges government intervention to address these challenges and stabilize the market.
