Group urges Federal government to stop Subsidized Food Imports or Risk a Food Crisis.

The Foundation for Peace Professionals (PeacePro) has cautioned the Federal Government against the continued importation of subsidized foreign agricultural commodities, warning that the policy is crippling Nigeria’s agro-industry, discouraging investment, and increasing the risk of food insecurity. While the government celebrates the decline in food prices, PeacePro argues that the trend is artificial and harmful, as cheap foreign imports undermine local farmers and threaten economic stability.
Executive Director Abdulrazaq Hamzat highlighted that other nations subsidize their agricultural sectors to boost production and job creation, whereas Nigeria’s reliance on foreign imports weakens its own agriculture. He warned that heavily subsidized foreign food, which outcompetes locally produced goods, discourages investment in agriculture and places millions of jobs in the value chain at risk. Hamzat stressed that Nigeria must prioritize local food production, invest in agro-processing industries, implement stricter import regulations, and provide meaningful subsidies to farmers to secure the country’s agricultural future and prevent long-term economic dependence on foreign nations.
