Group Supports Senate’s Decision for Wider Consultation on Proposed Tax Reform Bills
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has expressed support for the Senate’s decision to delay the passage of the proposed tax reform bills to allow for wider public consultation. In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Professor Tukur Muhammad Baba, the forum emphasized the importance of inclusive dialogue to ensure the proposed reforms serve the interests of all Nigerians.
The ACF acknowledged that periodic public policy reforms are essential and desirable in addressing emerging challenges and opportunities. However, it noted with concern the heated and divisive debates that have surrounded the proposed bills, often marked by acrimonious exchanges and attempts to intimidate or blackmail opposing voices.
“It is highly regretful that opinions have tended to involve unsavoury and often abusive words meant to denigrate, blackmail or intimidate anyone perceived, rightly or wrongly, as standing in support or opposing the bills,” the statement read.
The forum highlighted that the proposed tax reforms, given their far-reaching implications, require thorough consultation with critical stakeholders, including the National Economic Council and various interest groups. The apparent urgency by the Federal Government to push the bills through the Senate has raised concerns about potential underlying interests.
The ACF welcomed the Senate’s prudent decision to allow time for broader engagement with stakeholders, describing this as a step toward ensuring robust laws that reflect the aspirations of all Nigerians. It also encouraged all parties to respect differing opinions, emphasizing that debates over policy are integral to democratic governance.
“Expressions of contrary opinions and views are necessary ingredients of the legislative process, in line with the dictates of democracy, to ensure the emergence of robust laws that will stand the test of time,” the statement noted.
To contribute constructively, the ACF announced the formation of a committee of experts to review the proposed bills and provide recommendations to relevant government bodies.
In concluding, the ACF urged restraint, mutual respect, and decorum in discussions about the tax reform bills, underscoring the timeless adage that no one has a monopoly on knowledge or wisdom. It reiterated its commitment to promoting policies that benefit all Nigerians equitably, without bias toward specific interests or regions.
