Governor Zulum Urges President Tinubu to Reconsider Tax Reform Bills, Cites Regional Disparity
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his proposed Tax Reform bills, warning that the legislation could lead to setbacks across the country, particularly in Northern states.
Zulum emphasized that only Lagos State would stand to benefit from the reform, leaving other regions, especially the north, at a disadvantage.
Speaking on Friday, the governor argued that the tax reform would create economic challenges in various states, including those in the South East, South-South, South West, and particularly in states like Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo. He stressed that the bill would not benefit the majority of the country’s regions and could hinder their economic growth.
Zulum also noted that the President should not be swayed by claims suggesting that the northern population does not support him, clarifying that this perception is inaccurate. He reminded the president that a significant portion of his support came from the northern region, and the tax reform could undermine that support if not carefully reconsidered.
In his plea, Zulum urged President Tinubu to revisit the tax proposals, taking into account their potential negative impact on the broader nation. The governor’s comments reflect concerns that the reform might exacerbate existing regional inequalities, rather than fostering national progress.
