George Simion Leads Romanian Presidential Re-Run, Faces Runoff on May 18

Hard-right Eurosceptic leader George Simion has taken a strong lead in the first round of Romania’s presidential election re-run, winning 41% of the vote. He is set to face liberal Bucharest mayor Nicusor Dan, who finished second with 21%, in a decisive runoff scheduled for May 18. Simion, who heads the nationalist Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR), is now the clear favourite. This follows the cancellation of the initial vote late last year amid allegations of Russian interference in favour of another far-right candidate, Calin Georgescu.
