G20 Leaders Summit: President Tinubu Supports Launch of Global Alliance Against Hunger, Poverty
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has endorsed the establishment of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative spearheaded by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Speaking at the opening session of the 19th G20 Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Tinubu described the alliance as a transformative step in combating hunger and poverty worldwide.
“This bold and visionary step underscores Brazil’s leadership in addressing one of the most urgent and persistent challenges facing our world today,” Tinubu said, highlighting the alliance’s potential to foster collaboration among governments, international organizations, and civil society.
Tinubu drew parallels between the global initiative and Nigeria’s domestic priorities, noting that the alliance aligns with his administration’s focus on eradicating hunger and poverty. He emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to adopting international best practices to bolster economic development and endorsed the initiative as a significant move toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 1 (eradicating poverty) and SDG 2 (achieving zero hunger).
The president affirmed Nigeria’s readiness to collaborate with international partners, leveraging innovative solutions and financial support to enhance efforts against poverty and hunger. Tinubu also reiterated the country’s broader commitment to sustainable development and improving citizens’ quality of life.
In his address, Tinubu advocated for reform of the United Nations Security Council to better reflect global diversity and ensure Africa’s representation. He proposed allocating two permanent seats with equal rights to African nations, emphasizing Nigeria’s readiness to serve as Africa’s representative.
“The Security Council should expand its permanent and non-permanent member categories to reflect the world’s diversity and plurality better. Africa deserves priority in this process,” Tinubu stated.
The Nigerian leader also commended the G20 for granting permanent membership to the African Union, describing it as a step toward inclusive and reform-minded multilateralism.
Highlighting global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and unfair tax systems, Tinubu called for reforms to international financial institutions to address disparities between the Global North and South. He underscored Nigeria’s support for a proposed framework on global taxation aimed at creating a more equitable system, particularly for developing nations disadvantaged in taxing digital economies.
Tinubu concluded by urging the G20 to champion these reforms, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to active participation in the group and its pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
