Fuel Price Hike: Kwara CP Urges Commercial Transporters to Embrace Peace

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, has called on commercial transporters to maintain peace amidst recent disruptions in transport services in Ilorin following the federal government’s hike in fuel pump prices.
On Friday, September 6, 2024, Commissioner Olaiya met with representatives from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria (MOUN), and Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN) at the command headquarters. The meeting was prompted by a strike action initiated on September 5, 2024, by these unions in response to the increased price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol.
Joined by his management team and Aliyu Muyideen, the Senior Security Adviser to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Olaiya urged the unions to continue upholding the peace that Kwara State is known for. He reassured the unions that the federal government is taking steps to address the economic challenges affecting Nigerians.
“We understand the hardships you face, but it is essential to maintain peace and order,” Olaiya said. He encouraged the unions to voice their concerns through their respective leaders and emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation. He assured them that Governor AbdulRazaq is committed to their welfare and ready to provide necessary support.
The meeting ended on a positive note, with all parties pledging to work together to ensure the continued safety and prosperity of Kwara State residents, according to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Ejire Adeyemi Toun.
