Four Dead as Anambra Sit-at-Home Protest Turns Violent
At least four people have been reported dead following a deadly attack by unknown gunmen in the Anambra State communities of Ukpo and Abatete on Monday.
According to reports, the gunmen believed to be enforcing the Monday sit-at-home order, arrived in Abatete around 8:30 am and opened fire on residents they then moved to the Ukpo Roundabout, where they indiscriminately shot at people, including members of the Anambra State Vigilante Operatives.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed awareness of the incident, with SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, stating that officers have been dispatched to the scene as he assured the public that more details would be provided once the police received a full briefing on the incident.
The attack also left the President General of Abatete, Chimame Ezigbo, severely injured after being struck by a bullet and rushed to the hospital for urgent care. Another vigilante member was also injured and is receiving medical attention.
Local sources suggest that while the full extent of the casualties remains unclear, at least four people have been confirmed dead in the attack. The gunmen’s actions have sparked widespread concern in the area, with many questioning the motive behind the violence and its connection to the sit-at-home order enforced by some groups in the region. The attack has led to heightened fears among residents and security forces in Anambra State.
