Former Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Sentenced to 15 Years for Corruption

Ex-Peruvian President Ollanta Humala has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for receiving illegal campaign funds from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht during his 2011 election campaign. His wife, Nadine Heredia, who was also convicted, received the same sentence and has sought asylum at the Brazilian embassy in Lima, citing health concerns. Peru’s government has agreed to grant safe passage for her and their youngest son. Humala, who led Peru from 2011 to 2016, will begin serving his sentence immediately at a police base, even as his legal team prepares to appeal the ruling by April 29.
