Flamingos Soar in Ghana, Crush Niger 9-0 in WAFU U17 Girls’ Cup
Nigeria’s U17 girls, the Flamingos, delivered a commanding performance in Ghana, dismantling Niger 9-0 in their second match of this year’s WAFU U17 Girls’ Cup. The emphatic victory highlighted the team’s attacking prowess, with hat-tricks from Shakirat Moshood and Janet Akekoromowei “Semenya” stealing the show.
The Flamingos wasted no time asserting dominance, as Aishat Animashaun opened the scoring just five minutes in, capitalizing on a precise in-swinger from Mary Mamudu. Moments later, FIFA World Cup star Moshood unleashed a stunning 35-yard screamer to double Nigeria’s lead in the 17th minute.
Moshood struck again six minutes later, this time assisted by Animashaun, before Akekoromowei added a fourth in the 33rd minute with a close-range effort. The Nigerien defense crumbled further as Akekoromowei netted twice more, including a powerful header in the 42nd minute to complete her hat-trick.
Not to be outshone, Moshood secured her own hat-trick just before halftime, making it 7-0 by the break. She wasn’t finished, adding her fourth in the 59th minute with a brilliant solo effort that showcased her precision and composure.
Peace Effiong rounded off the rout in the 79th minute, unleashing a long-range strike to seal Nigeria’s ninth goal and cement the Flamingos’ dominance.
With back-to-back victories, the Flamingos are brimming with confidence as they prepare to face Cote d’Ivoire on Monday. Their relentless attack and cohesive teamwork have made them strong contenders for the WAFU U17 Girls’ Cup title.
