Fire Guts Market at Trademore Estate in Abuja
Residents of Trademore Estate in the Lugbe area of Abuja were left in shock on Monday after a fire broke out at the market within the estate.
The blaze, which started around 3:30 a.m., occurred shortly after the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) restored power to the area as the fire quickly spread through the market before emergency services could respond.
While the exact cause of the fire is still unknown, eyewitnesses speculate that it may have been related to electrical issues.
Manzo Ezekiel, spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the incident to the media, explaining that he was alerted about the fire around 4 a.m. He immediately reached out to relevant authorities, and fire service personnel were eventually able to control the situation. The fire was extinguished after a two-hour struggle by the Federal Fire Service, with support from local stations.
Although the full extent of the damage remains unclear, the NEMA spokesperson could not confirm any casualties, as he was out of Abuja on official business. A resident named Joe, who was among the first to notice the fire, also suggested that an electrical fault might have been the cause. He added that residents managed to alert the fire service, who responded promptly and contained the fire by around 5 a.m.
In the aftermath of the incident, efforts to determine the cause of the fire are ongoing, but the situation has left the residents concerned, as the market was a vital part of the community.
