Federal Ministry Alerts Nigerians on Anthrax Outbreak in Zamfara, Urges Vigilance

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has issued a public alert regarding the outbreak of anthrax in Zamfara State. The disease was reported on a farm in the state, and the ministry has raised concerns about its potential spread. The alert was made public by Ben Goong, Director of the Information and Public Relations Department, who emphasized the seriousness of the outbreak.
Anthrax is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, which affects warm-blooded animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and horses, as well as humans. The infection can result in high morbidity and mortality if left untreated. It spreads through contact with the spores of the bacterium, often found in infected animal products or by-products.
Symptoms of anthrax in humans include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, headaches, and bleeding from major body openings. The ministry has urged residents in Zamfara and neighboring states to be vigilant and report any unusual symptoms in animals or humans. The public has been advised to follow all preventive guidelines issued by health and livestock authorities to mitigate the spread of the disease.
In response to the outbreak, the ministry stressed the importance of immediate detection and swift action to control its spread. Preventive measures such as risk assessments, vaccination of at-risk animals, and heightened surveillance in surrounding regions will be key to containing the situation. The ministry assured the public that it is working with relevant stakeholders to ensure an effective response to the outbreak.
