Federal Government Urges China to Extend Trade Tariff Removal Amid Strengthening Ties

The Federal Government has urged China to extend its recent trade tariff removal to Nigeria, as it has done for 33 other African nations. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, appealed during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai, emphasizing Nigeria’s focus on industrialization and economic diversification under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
She highlighted China’s contributions to Nigeria’s infrastructure and the need for support in key sectors like electric vehicle assembly, digital technology, renewable energy, and agriculture. Ambassador Dunhai reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening ties, noting that trade between both nations exceeded $21 billion last year, with Nigerian exports increasing by 25%. He also emphasized the importance of manufacturing and the recently renewed $2 billion currency swap agreement in boosting trade and investment.
