Federal Government Responds to Emir Sanusi’s Comments on Economic Reforms

The Federal Government has responded to recent remarks made by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, in which he expressed reluctance to assist President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges.
During a public event in Lagos, the Emir had voiced his decision to refrain from suggesting solutions to the effects of the current administration’s economic policies.
In a statement released on Thursday, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, criticized the Emir’s stance, emphasizing that the government does not require his “stamp of approval” for its economic reforms, which he described as “laudable.”
While acknowledging that every Nigerian has the right to express their opinions, the minister expressed disappointment that a leader of the Emir’s stature would “shuffle off saying the truth because of personal interest hinged on imaginary antagonism.”
The statement highlighted the administration’s belief that Nigeria is at a crucial turning point requiring bold and decisive actions to overcome economic challenges. It defended the government’s reforms, describing them as transformative and essential for the country’s long-term stability and growth—principles Emir Sanusi had previously supported.
The government noted that policies such as the unification of exchange rates and the removal of fuel subsidies were already yielding positive results, including increased foreign reserves, strengthened investor confidence, and reduced debt service-to-revenue ratios. These reforms, the statement claimed, have freed resources for critical sectors like infrastructure, education, and healthcare, with institutions such as the World Bank projecting economic recovery for Nigeria.
The minister further criticized the Emir’s shift in loyalty, stating that his economic background should compel him to contribute constructively rather than undermine policies necessary for national progress.
“We urge the Emir to rise above personal interests and partisan undertones and prioritize the greater good of Nigerians,” Idris stated, calling for unity among all stakeholders to rebuild the nation.
The statement concluded by reaffirming President Tinubu’s commitment to economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity, emphasizing the importance of collaboration over divisive rhetoric during this critical phase in the country’s development
