Federal Government Prioritizes Protection of Nigerians Abroad Ahead of National Migration Dialogue
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of Nigerians living abroad, especially as Nigeria takes the lead in the Euro-African Dialogue on Migration and Development in 2025.
Alhaji Tijani Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner for the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), made this statement during a news conference in Abuja on Friday. His remarks came ahead of the National Migration Dialogue, scheduled for December 9.
This year’s migration dialogue is themed “Beyond Borders: Celebrating Migrants’ Legacy, Protecting Their Rights,” which aims to highlight the vital contributions of migrants to both Nigeria’s economy and their host countries. Ahmed emphasized that the event serves to protect migrants’ rights, ensuring they live and work with dignity, and contribute positively to the socio-economic development of their communities.
Ahmed further explained that the dialogue would focus on addressing the challenges associated with irregular migration and promoting regular migration pathways. The initiative aims to ensure that migrants have access to decent work, reliable information, and a safe migration process that upholds their rights and dignity.
Looking ahead to Nigeria’s role in the Euro-African Dialogue on Migration and Development, also known as the Rabat Process, Ahmed highlighted the potential for knowledge sharing, technological progress, and increased remittances and investments. He urged everyone to reflect on migration’s impact on individuals and communities, and thanked the media for helping raise awareness about the benefits of safe, orderly, and regular migration.
