Federal Government Pledges Reform in Correctional Service, Targets Inmate Empowerment

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has pledged to eliminate corruption in correctional centers and shift their focus from punishment to rehabilitation. Speaking at a public hearing in Abuja, he emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming the correctional service into a model for rehabilitation, empowerment, and reintegration. He highlighted the need for adequate resources, vocational training, mental health services, and humane treatment of inmates, stressing that correctional officers should serve as agents of reform. Tunji-Ojo assured that the government is dedicated to ensuring transparency, accountability, and systemic improvements in the correctional sector.
