Federal Government Launches Free CNG Bus Service in Abuja to Ease Transportation Costs
The Federal Government has rolled out a free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) bus service in Abuja to alleviate the burden of high transportation costs for residents.
The initiative, which began on December 2, 2024, was announced through a video shared by the Presidential CNG Initiative on its X (formerly Twitter) page.
The buses, powered by environmentally friendly CNG, operate along key routes connecting the capital’s suburbs to central locations such as Eagle Square and Berger bus stop. The free service is scheduled to run for 40 days, ending on January 6, 2025.
Last week, the Ministry of Transportation handed over 15 CNG-powered buses to three transport unions: the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN). The initiative aims to mitigate the impact of rising transportation costs on commuters.
Passengers who have benefited from the service lauded the government’s effort.
“I just boarded a CNG bus going to Mararaba, and we were asked not to pay. I didn’t pay. I hope it will continue for long,” said Fatima, one of the commuters.
Another passenger, Blessing, shared her optimism: “If they’re doing like this, we’ll be happy. After this, let them bring down transportation costs.”
The CNG initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to promote sustainable energy solutions and provide immediate relief to citizens amidst economic challenges.
