Federal Government Deploys CNG Buses for Airport Shuttle Services

December 31, 2024

The Federal Government has officially rolled out a fleet of locally assembled Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for airport shuttle services, marking a significant step in its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly transportation.

The first batch of these CNG-powered buses, manufactured by Lanre Shittu Motors (LSM), was received at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos by officials from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), led by the agency’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku.

During the unveiling ceremony at the Lagos airport, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Management, Festus Keyamo, emphasized that the initiative was in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu. He highlighted the importance of the move in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to meet global climate targets by reducing reliance on fossil fuels like petrol and diesel.

“What you see here today is a fleet of CNG buses for FAAN to commence passenger movement at all our airports immediately,” Keyamo said. “This is part of Nigeria’s broader commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner, sustainable energy sources.”

The newly unveiled buses are designed to be both eco-friendly and inclusive, with zero emissions and accessibility features for persons with disabilities. The introduction of the CNG-powered buses is part of the federal government’s broader strategy to ease the impact of the fuel subsidy removal by providing a sustainable alternative for public transport.

According to Taiwo Shittu, the Managing Director of Lanre Shittu Motors, the CNG buses come in two specifications: a 31-seater designed for airport shuttle services and a 54-seater suited for mass transit. The buses are equipped with modern amenities, including air conditioning, viewing screens, and charging stations, ensuring a comfortable travel experience for passengers.

Shittu added that the introduction of the CNG buses marks a key milestone in LSM’s aim to provide more sustainable and efficient transportation options, not just in Lagos but across other parts of Nigeria.
